Nordic Walking is a special
technique using poles, which came about in 1933 when the Cross Country
Skiers in Finland had no snow to use in the Summer to keep them fit. Since
then it has been altered slightly to encompass our modern needs and terrain,
but the many health benefits are still with us today.
Basically, so long as you can walk, anyone one of any age or fitness level can learn and benefit. The special lightweight poles lift and propel you forward, taking strain from hips, knees, ankles and feet. No matter what distance you can normally walk, you will walk further and faster than before, whilst exercising your heart and 90% of the body’s muscles, including the core. Because the action stems from gently rotating and moving the shoulders, lower back pain is greatly eased, as is tension and pain in shoulders and neck muscles. Weight control is an added bonus, burning 40% more calories than normal walking, giving the body a similar workout to the gym, but all in the fresh air! By using our upper body to take the strain, you will be less tired from a Nordic Walk, and will be energised rather than depleted! In Germany, much work is being done in the field of Diabetes, Stroke, Parkinson’s, Obesity, Depression, Heart conditions, Dementia and much more. There they give prescriptions for Nordic Walking along side any tablets that may be needed. But normally, for weight, or depression, blood pressure etc the first point of treatment is a prescription for Nordic Walking. Finally, because there is an aerobic side to Nordic Walking, fresh air, lovely scenery and good company all add up to a most enjoyable walk, with that extra feel good factor! |
